ICD-10 Code Lookup (2027 ICD-10-CM)

Search every 2027 ICD-10-CM diagnosis code by number or by words. See if a code is billable, what it means, and whether it changed on October 1, 2026.

All 98,403 codes in the 2027 ICD-10-CM code set (74,879 billable), from the official CDC and CMS files. Valid for dates of service from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027.

Diagnosis denials eating your revenue? Our denial management team fixes CO-11, CO-50 and CO-167 denials and stops them at the source, and our medical billing services code every claim to the current ICD-10-CM year. It starts with a free one-week audit.

What Changed in ICD-10-CM for 2027

The 2027 ICD-10-CM code set took effect on October 1, 2026. It has 190 new codes, 30 deleted codes and 4 revised titles. The number of billable codes went from 74,719 to 74,879.

Use these codes for dates of service from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. The date of service decides the code set, not the date you send the claim. There is no grace period, so a deleted code on a claim for an October 2026 visit will be rejected.

How to Read an ICD-10-CM Code

An ICD-10-CM code has 3 to 7 characters. The first character is a letter. The first three characters are the category, and a dot comes after them.

PartExampleWhat it tells you
Category (3 characters)E11Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Subcategory (4th to 6th)E11.6, E11.62More detail: the type of complication
Full codeE11.621Type 2 diabetes with a foot ulcer. This is billable.
7th characterS82.101AInjury codes: A for the initial encounter, D for a later encounter, S for sequela
Placeholder XT52.891A, S43.61XAAn X fills an empty spot so the 7th character stays in 7th place

Billable Codes and Header Codes

Only a code with nothing more specific below it is billable. E11 is a header, because it has subcodes. E11.9 is billable. If you put a header code on a claim, it will be rejected, or denied as CO-16 with remark code M76 (missing or invalid diagnosis).

This tool marks every code as billable or not billable. For a header code, it lists the billable codes below it, so you can pick the right one.

Diagnosis Denials and How to Fix Them

DenialWhat it usually meansFix
CO-11The diagnosis does not fit the procedureCheck the link between each CPT line and its diagnosis pointer.
CO-50The payer says the service was not medically necessary for that diagnosisCheck the payer policy for covered diagnosis codes, then appeal with the notes.
CO-167The diagnosis is not coveredConfirm the code is the most specific one the notes support.
CO-16 with M76The diagnosis is missing, not valid, or a header codeLook the code up here and send a corrected claim with a billable code.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ICD-10-CM codes are there in 2027?
The 2027 code set has 74,879 billable codes, out of 98,403 codes and headers in total. It added 190 codes, deleted 30 and revised 4 titles.
When do the 2027 ICD-10-CM codes take effect?
On October 1, 2026. Use them for dates of service from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. For earlier dates of service, use the 2026 codes, even if you send the claim later.
How do I know if an ICD-10 code is billable?
A code is billable when nothing more specific sits below it. Search the code above and the tool shows Billable or Not billable. For a header code like E11, it lists the billable codes under it, such as E11.9.
What replaced Z68.1 in 2027?
Z68.1 was deleted on October 1, 2026. For adults 20 and older, use Z68.18 for a BMI of 18.4 or less and Z68.19 for a BMI of 18.5 to 19.9. Our BMI calculator gives the right code for you.
What is the new ICD-10 code for plantar fasciitis?
From October 1, 2026, plantar fasciitis has its own codes: M67.A01 for the right foot, M67.A02 for the left foot and M67.A09 for an unspecified foot. Before that it was coded with M72.2, which is now deleted.
What is the difference between ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS?
ICD-10-CM codes diagnoses in every setting, including doctor offices and hospitals. ICD-10-PCS codes procedures only for hospital inpatient stays. Outpatient procedures use CPT and HCPCS codes instead.
